LEWISBURG, Pa. –Trying to outsmart the weather, Bucknell men's tennis played late into the night at the Bison Quad on Friday. The matches under the lights proved lucky for the Orange and Blue, which will have at least three singles players vying for a spot in the finals and two doubles teams moving into the semis. Play is expected to resume Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts despite rain in the forecast.
Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) make up one of Bucknell's doubles squads looking for a semifinal berth. The duo sailed through their first two matches, winning 8-0 over Niagara and 8-1 over Youngstown State. Possibly waiting for them in the bottom half of the draw are Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex). Cohenca and Zimmer improved to 8-0 in tournament action after defeating Niagara and Colgate both by a score of 8-6.
Cohenca was the last off the court as his second round singles match extended past midnight. The Bison senior pulled out a tight contest with Niagara's David Raymond after winning the first set in a tiebreak. A break in the last service game of the second set gave Cohenca the match, 7-6, 7-5.
With a win over Bloomsburg's Ricky Dove tomorrow, Cohenca could meet Zimmer in the Flight A final. Zimmer defeated Dawoud Kabli of Youngstown State 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before going on to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Colgate's Luke Gensberg. To get to the final, however, Zimmer must first take out Max Schmerin of Youngstown State in the semis.
There was plenty of other action in the other singles flights as well. Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) moved into the semis with a straight-sets win over Bloomsburg's Tyler Pultro. He will face the winner of Katten vs. Sean Spellberg after Katten knocked out the Penguins' Felipe Rosa in the first round.
Also moving into the quarterfinals of Flight C is Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). Roy Skinner (New Canaan, Conn./St. Luke's School) and Chris Tortora (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) received first-round byes.
