ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Bucknell men's golf team struggled a bit on the first day of its first away tournament of the season, posting scores of 309 and 301 at the Cornell Invitational on Sasturday. The Bison, who were led by J.J. Szmadzinski's 1-over-par 73 in round two, stand in a tie for ninth place with 18 holes still to come on Sunday.
Jon Hartman's 75 was Bucknell's low round in the morning. Szmadzinski followed with a 76, followed by Thomas Walter and Will Bachman with 79s and Schuyler Stitzer with an 81.
In the second round, Szmadzinski (73) and Walter (74) posted two of the better rounds in the field. Hartman and Bachman both carded 77s, and Stitzer shot 83.
Szmadzinski is the low Bison player through 36 holes at 149, which puts him in a tie for 22nd place.
With rounds of 287-291, Columbia has the team lead by just one shot over Binghamton and three over Delaware. Bucknell and host Cornell are tied for ninth with a total of 610.
Lafayette's Carter Rufe is 5-under through 36 holes and has a four-stroke advantage over Columbia's Michael Yiu and the Binghamton tandem of David Cellura and Paul Andrews.
Bucknell tees off at 8:20 on Sunday, playing alongside Canisius and Ottawa.
