BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis had a last-minute change of plans, making the trip to the Bloomsburg Fall Classic due to rain at Georgetown, and the move proved a good one for some of the Bison. Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) won his first two singles matches, improving his fall record to 6-0. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) also remained undefeated in doubles.
The Bucknell women now have the weekend off. They were also scheduled to play at the Georgetown Classic before bad weather cancelled their second tournament of the early season.
Canibe did not have an easy time keeping his singles record perfect. The freshman, who won his flight at last week's Bucknell Invitational, defeated Riley Baver from Mary Washington 6-4, 1-6, (10-8) in the first round. His second-round match was no walk in the park either, as he needed another super tiebreak to pull out the win. After dropping the first set, Canibe defeated Mary Washington's Kevin Aquino1-6, 6-3, (17-15).
Cohenca and Zimmer opened their day with an 8-3 win over the pairing from Ithaca College. They later improved to 5-0 on the fall with an equally quick 8-2 win over Mary Washington. Like Canibe, the Bison duo is coming off a title at the Bucknell Invitational.
Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) went 2-0 on the day as well. The senior was a straight-sets winner over his opponent from Ithaca, 6-1, 7-5. He then defeated Mark Hyland of Mary Washington 6-2, 3-6, (10-6).
Also gathering singles victories were Zimmer, Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK), Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Chris Tortora (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). Maxson and Tortora also went 2-0 together in doubles, as did Morque and Katten. Canibe and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) bounced back from a loss in the first round of doubles play to win 9-7 against Ithaca in round two.
Play at the Bloomsburg Fall Classic will resume tomorrow.
