Riegel, Resh Push Bucknell Field Hockey to Overtime Victory at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Vickie Resh (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) tied the game at 1-1 and Ellie Riegel (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored on her first career shot, sending Bucknell field hockey to another overtime victory, this time 2-1 past Lock Haven at Charlotte Smith Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the Bison's (2-4) second comeback win in extra time in the last three games. Both players recorded their first career goals in the contest.
The win ends Bucknell's nine-game losing streak to Lock Haven (3-5). The last time the Bison came out on top against the Lady Eagles was in 2000, a game that also ended 2-1 in overtime. Despite trailing in the overall series, Bucknell is now 3-0-1 all-time against Lock Haven when the game goes longer than 70 minutes.
Just as it did a week ago against Central Michigan, Bucknell found itself trailing by a goal at halftime. For the second time, the Bison rallied down the stretch to pull out a victory in dramatic fashion. Resh capitalized on a penalty corner, netting the first goal of her career with about 10 minutes left to play. Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) earned the assists.
Bucknell outdueled Lock Haven in penalty corners for the game. At the final horn, the Bison held a 10-3 advantage in the category, including 8-0 in the first half.
Resh's score knotted up the game at one goal apiece. The sophomore then made a huge defensive play late with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Lock Haven tried to get out on a breakaway, making a long pass down field. Resh dove to deflect the pass and ruin the Lady Eagles' scoring opportunity. The play ran enough time off the clock to keep Lock Haven from getting another chance.
The tie was the extra chance the Bison needed. A mere :45 into overtime, Riegel collected a loose ball in front of the Lock Haven net and put it over goalkeeper Lindsay Staufenberg.
Staufenberg (3-4) took the loss, allowing two goals and making only one save. Bucknell recorded more shots than Lock Haven, 10-8, but the difference came in shots on goal where the Eagles had the edge 7-3.
Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was Bucknell's winner in goal. The sophomore made six saves with one goal allowed.
After falling behind on Leslie Ahern's goal 12 minutes into the first half, Bucknell earned its second comeback win of the fall. The Bison also overcame a one-goal deficit last Saturday against Central Michigan before defeating the Chippewas by a 2-1 score in extra time. Bucknell is 4-1 in overtime games in the last two seasons.
Bucknell will be back in action on Sept. 24 when it hosts Rider at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. The game is the first of five straight for the Bison on their home turf.
