LEWISBURG, Pa. - Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) earned his first career title, winning the Flight B singles championship at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday morning. The freshman started his year a perfect 4-0 and gives the Bison their second title of the tournament after Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) earn doubles gold yesterday. The trio combined for a perfect 11-0 record.
Playing in his first intercollegiate tournament, Canibe earned the title over Sergio Cavajai of Saint Francis (Pa.) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. It is the second consecutive season in which a Bison freshman has won in his first-ever tournament. Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) was the Black Draw champion at the Northeast Intercollegiate last fall when he started his career 6-0 in singles.
In the consolation rounds, Chris Tortora (West Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) won their final singles matches. Maxson had the smoothest run, defeating Ryan Fitzgerald of Loyola (Md.) 6-3, 6-4. Both Tortora and Rosen went to super tiebreaks to earn victories. Tortora was a 7-5, 1-6, (10-4) winner over Loyola's Patrick Glaessner. Rosen also defeated an opponent from Loyola, Pierce Norton, 5-7, 6-0, (10-6).
Cohenca and Zimmer were scheduled to meet in the Flight A singles championship. The final match will be played at a later date. Both players ended the weekend a perfect 5-0, including 3-0 together in doubles and 2-0 in singles.
Bucknell will be back in action Sept. 23-25 at the Georgetown Invitational in Washington, D.C.
