LEWISBURG, Pa. - At least one Bison doubles team will play for a title and several single players advanced to the second round as Bucknell men's tennis opened its season at the Bucknell Invitational on Friday. The Bison went 11-2 on the first day of competition at the Varsity Tennis Courts. Action continues through Sunday.
Freshman Roy Skinner and sophomore Kyle Rosen battled through a tough opening doubles match, but came out on top 9-7 against Eric Michaelis and Keishi Goto of Loyola (Md.). The young Bison duo then ran up against their elder teammates Josh Katten and Kelly Morque, who won the second-round matchup 8-5.
Katten and Morque will take on another pair of teammates in Chris Tortora and Aidan Lynch in the semis. Lynch and Tortora already have two wins under their belt, having beaten opponents from Saint Francis (Pa.) and Loyola, 8-5 and 8-4, respectively.
In the bottom half of the draw, Gregg Cohenca and Evan Zimmer moved into the semifinal with a 9-7 win over Nate Fleming and Chris Jimenez of Saint Francis. The Bison will play Mount St. Mary's for a berth in the final.
In singles action, Morque, Katten and Rosen all won their Flight A first-round matches in straight sets. Katten had the biggest test against Fleming. The Bison advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 score. Katten is now tied for 25th all-time at Bucknell in combined victories with a record of 66-48.
Scott Bernstein, Lynch and Octavio Canibe also sailed through to the second round of Flight B in straight sets. Lynch allowed just one game to his opponent, defeating Michaelis 6-0, 6-1.
