LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis' Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) won the doubles title and three Bison advanced to tomorrow's singles finals as play continued at the Bucknell Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday. Cohenca and Zimmer will face off for the Flight A singles championship, while Octavio Canibe(Spring, Texas/John Cooper School) will play for the title in Flight B.
Cohenca and Zimmer sailed to an 8-0 decision over Mount St. Mary's to advance to the doubles final where they met teammates Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Josh Katten(Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK). That match was more competitive, but Cohenca and Zimmer had the edge, winning 8-4.
Cohenca and Zimmer will have to battle each other to see who wins a second win in the first tournament of the year. Cohenca had the tougher road to get to the final. His day in singles began with a 5-7, 6-0, (11-9) win over Pierce Norton of Loyola (Md.). He also needed three sets to get past Morque in the semifinal, 7-6, 2-6, (10-4).
Zimmer advanced in straight sets, first at 6-2, 6-4 over Saint Francis' Lawson Barter. He also took out a teammate in the semis, defeating Katten 6-4, 6-4.
Also qualifying for his first career final is Canibe who defeated two teammates to reach the championship round. The freshman opened with a 2-6, 6-4, (10-7) win over Aidan Lynch (La Cañada, Calif./La Cañada) in the quarterfinals. He later defeated Roy Skinner(New Canaan, Conn./St. Luke's School), who had won a 6-2, 6-7, (10-6) match over Loyola's Ryan Fitzgerald in the previous round, with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
Canibe will next face Sergio Carvajai of Saint Francis (Pa.). Carvajai has made a habit of eliminating Bison from the main draw this weekend as he defeated Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) 7-5, 6-1 and Scott Bernstein(Westfield, N.J./Westfield) 6-2, 6-2 today.
The final day of the Bucknell Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow with all singles finals on court.
