LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomore Schuyler Stitzer (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) carded a 1-under-par 69 and Bucknell shot 291 as a team, but the Bison saw their four-year winning streak at the Bucknell Invitational come to an end on Saturday with a fourth-place finish. Stitzer's career-best round bumped him up to a tie for eighth place individually, the best finish on the team.
Longwood closed with a 1-over 281, the best team score of the weekend, and captured the 54-hole event with a total of 857. Army finished second at 866, followed by 36-hole leader Lafayette (869), Bucknell (872), Navy (875), Lehigh (877), Canisius (880), Colgate (880), Fordham (882), Laval (888), Messiah (902), the Bucknell "Blue" team (903) and Ottawa (927).
Cool temperatures and soft greens helped keep scores low, as all but one team in the field shot 298 or better on Saturday.
Bucknell had posted rounds of 292 and 289 on Friday, then finished up with a 291 consisting of Stitzer's 69 and 74s from J.J. Szmadzinski (Northville, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central), Will Bachman (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and Dan Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Malvern). Bucknell's day-one leader, Jon Hartman (Essex Fells, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), closed with a 77.
Stitzer finished with a 215 total, the best 54-hole score of his young career, and Saturday's round was the first of his career in the 60s. Austin Gray of Longwood shot 208 (68-71-69) to win the individual title by five shots over four players.
Sophomore Pete Scialabba (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Friends Academy) carded 75s, Patrick Hagerty (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) shot his second straight 76, and Zach Pogust (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) posted a 78.
Coming into this year's event, Bucknell had won six of the last eight Bucknell Invitational titles, including the last four in a row.
The Bison are back in action next weekend at the Cornell Invitational.
