BUFFALO, N.Y. - Bucknell outshot Canisius 22-8 but saw its goal drought continue on Sunday as the host Golden Griffins used a Brooke Bandazian goal in the 80th minute to hold off the Bison 1-0 at the Demske Sports Complex. Bucknell fell to 0-3 on the season with all three games decided by 1-0 margins, while Canisius improved to 1-2.
Caroline Robert made eight saves for the Golden Griffins including two in succession in the 83rd minute after Canisius had just gone ahead. Bucknell applied good pressure in the final eight minutes and had some dangerous balls in the box, but could not convert.
After a scoreless first half, Canisius earned a penalty kick in the 57th minute when Bison keeper Colleen Garrehy was called for taking down Brianna Smith in the box. But Smith sent her PK wide to the right and the game remained deadlocked.
Not long after the failed PK, Bucknell fired four shots in a span of less than two minutes. Robert saved two of them, including a leaping stop on Chelsey Garkowski. Robert made six of her eight saves in the second half.
Canisius finally broke the scoreless tie at the 79:47 mark when Bandazian collected a loose ball on the left side and slipped into the right side of the net.
Bucknell had four corner kicks to one for Canisius, while the Golden Griffins finished with a 16-8 lead in fouls. Garrehy played the full 90 minutes in goal for Bucknell and was credited with three saves.
In three games this season the Bison have now outshot their opponents 40-21 but have yet to find the net.
Bucknell will now have a week off to get ready for a game at UMBC on Sept. 4 in Catonsville, Md.
