LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior lacrosse defenseman Alex Lyons (Owings Mills, Md./Boys' Latin), one of the key players in Bucknell's dominating performance at this weekend's Patriot League Tournament, has been named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week. Lyons earned All-Tournament honors after the Bucknell defense allowed only eight total goals in two victories over Lehigh and Colgate.
Lyons has started every game this season for the 14-2 Bison, who moved up one spot to No. 11 in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Poll this week.
In Bucknell's 13-5 win over Lehigh in the semifinals, Lyons recorded four caused turnovers and four ground balls, and he also scored his first career goal. It was a highlight-reel tally, coming after he picked up a ground ball near midfield and split a couple of defenders before racing into the box and bouncing a shot into the top corner of the cage. It was a big goal as well, stretching what had been a 2-2 game at the half up to 5-2 in the third quarter.
In Sunday's championship game against 16th-ranked Colgate, Lyons collected five more ground balls in a suffocating 10-3 Bison victory.
For the season, Lyons now has 62 ground balls and a team-high 26 caused turnovers. The ground ball total is the highest among all Patriot League long poles and fifth-highest overall. It is also the 10th-highest figure in program history and is just five shy of the single-season record for a Bucknell defenseman.
Bucknell will now be headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. The Bison will find out their opponent when the field is announced on Sunday, May 8 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
