Moniz Sets School Record as Bucknell Opens at ECAC Track & Field Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. – Competing in her last collegiate race, Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) broke the Bucknell record in the 5,000 meters at the ECAC Championships at Princeton's Weaver Stadium on Friday night. The senior crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 56.23 seconds for the fastest time by a Bison in a decade.
Moniz was 14th overall in the race. The fastest race of her career by more than seven seconds, the senior passes Becki Marshall (16:59.98) on the program record list. Moniz and Marshall are the only two Bison to run the 5,000 meters in under 17 minutes.
The 5,000-meter record is the third to fall in two weeks. Moniz joins the 4x100 relay and Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) in the javelin as the latest top marks to fall at last weekend's Patriot League Championships.
Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) posted the best time of her career in the 10,000 meters. The senior finished in 36:45.67 for 11th place overall. The time also moves her up the list to ninth in program annals.
“The two senior ladies finished their careers with their best races ever,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “Sarah just willed it the last 800 meters to set the record. To finish like they did is a huge tribute to their work ethic and dedication.”
Also competing in the 10,000 for the Bison were Eileen Foley (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) and Melissa Smith (Mercer, Pa./Mercer), who placed 20th and 24th, respectively.
Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) and Abby Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata) kicked the field events off with the discus. Misko was 16th overall with a throw of 139 feet, 0 inches, while Monaghan was 22nd with a mark of 133-11.
Bucknell will continue competition tomorrow starting with the women's javelin and men's hammer throw at 10 a.m. Three Bison relays and 15 individuals will vie for All-East honors on the second of three days at the championships.
