Folger, Distance Medley Relay Jump Start Bucknell Women's Track & Field at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – Bucknell women's track and field opened competition at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field on Thursday with some strong performances in the distance and throws events. Kat Folger (Groton, Mass./Bishop Guertin) and the distance medley relay team both put up some of the best marks in program history to lead the Bison.
The distance medley – Emily Liggett (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)), Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and Sasha Hornock (Dover, Pa./Dover) – ran the second-fastest time in program history. The quartet clocked in at 11 minutes, 46.77 seconds despite it being the first time racing together. The time makes the relay just the second in Bucknell annals under 11:50 and was almost five seconds behind the school record (11:41.57) set in 2006.
The Bucknell distance medley was third in the college division at Thursday's meet.
Folger's top-10 mark was a smaller improvement over her own personal best, which she set last weekend. The junior was fourth in the javelin's college division with a throw of 144-6. It was just three feet better than her previous career best and keeps her in third on the program record list.
Although not the fastest race of her career, Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) ran a season-best 9:53.30 in the 3,000 meter championship race. The senior was 15 seconds faster than her previous best mark of the year but 12 seconds slower than her finish at last year's Penn Relays.
Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) was 25th in the shot put with a season-best 41-3 ¼.
Thursday marked the only day of competition for the women's squad at the Penn Relays, although the Bison men will try to build on the start Friday and Saturday. Both teams will also be in action at the Bloomsburg Maroon & Gold Open on Saturday starting at noon.
