WORCESTER, Mass. (Lake Quinsigamond) - Another year, another title for the Bucknell women's rowing team. The Bison claimed their sixth consecutive Patriot League crown Sunday morning on Lake Quinsigamond. Bucknell won the varsity eight and second varsity eight races, and took fourth in the varsity four as it totaled 33 team points. Navy was second in the team standings with 28 points. Bison head coach Stephen Kish was awarded his fifth career, and third consecutive, Patriot League Coach of the Year citation, while the varsity eight was named Boat of the Year for the sixth straight year.
Bucknell and Navy are still the only two teams to win Patriot League titles. The Mids claimed the crown in 2005, the first year rowing was a Patriot League-sponsored sport. Since that time the Bison have dominated, winning six straight titles. Bucknell has registered at least 27 points in the team standings every year since 2006 and has swept all three races twice (2007, 2009) and has won two races on three other occasions: 2006 (V8/V4), 2010 (V8, 2V8) and 2011 (V8, 2V8).
The Bison varsity eight clinched the title for Bucknell as it posted its sixth consecutive win at the Patriot League Championships, finishing in 6 minutes, 54.2 seconds, 3.0 seconds ahead of second-place Colgate. The Bison were behind at the start of the race, but came back quickly and led the rest of the way.
The second varsity eight posted a time of 6:57.2 to finish ahead of runner-up Navy (6:59.6). Bucknell took control from the start and never trailed in the race. Only the Mids finished within 10 seconds of the Bison.
The Bucknell varsity four opened the day's racing with a fourth-place finish in an exciting, hotly contested event. Navy, Colgate and Holy Cross finished 1-2-3 and the second, third and fourth finishers were separated by just 3.0 seconds.
"Lake Quinsigamond is where we won our first title, so it was nice to come back here and win a hard-fought championship," said Kish. "This was our sweetest title to date due to the expectations and pressure our team members place on themselves."
Scoring for the events is done in a 6-5-4-3-2-1 order for the varsity four, 12-10-8-6-4-2 for the second varsity eight and 18-15-12-9-6-3 for the varsity eight, meaning Bucknell had to finish one spot better than Navy and Holy Cross in the morning's final race, the varsity eight, to claim the title. The Mids entered the varsity eight event with 16 points, the Bison had 15 and the Crusaders had 12.
Colgate finished third in the team standings behind Bucknell and Navy with 22 points, while Holy Cross (21), second-year Patriot League member MIT (12) and Lehigh (10) rounded out the six-team field.
Bucknell seniors Victoria Dudley and Carol Schoenecker became just the second and third student-athletes in Patriot League history to be four-time varsity eight champions. They joined current Bison assistant coach Page Kannor, a 2009 Bucknell graduate, in accomplishing that feat.
Bucknell's senior class - Christina Cabiati, Allegra Colandro, Lindsay Cover, Dudley, Stephanie Frank, Anna Johnson, Taylor Jordan, Allison Martens, Caitlyn Oster, Christa Rotolo and Schoenecker - became the third consecutive group of Bison seniors to claim four Patriot League titles during their careers.
The Patriot League title for women's rowing marks the third for a Bucknell team in 2010-11. The Bison men's soccer and men's basketball squads previously claimed championships.
The Patriot League Championships do not conclude Bucknell's season as it will be in action next week against Duke and Iowa on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, N.Y., and at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships. Also ahead on the schedule for the Bison is the Dad Vail Regatta in mid-May and the IRA National Championship Regatta for the lightweights the first weekend in June.
