ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Third-seeded Bucknell women's tennis cruised to a 6-0 win over Lafayette at the Brigade Sports Complex on Friday afternoon, sending them to yet another Patriot League Tournament semifinal match. While the Bison (10-10) won their seventh consecutive quarterfinal contest, Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) swept both her matches to set the program record for singles and doubles victories. She will have the opportunity to take sole possession of those records tomorrow at 10 a.m. when Bucknell takes on the host and No. 2 seed Navy.
Lucido, who already holds the Bucknell record for combined victories outright at 168-71, is now tied for first with Tanya Sichko in singles wins at 86-36 and with Veronica Brown in doubles wins at 82-35. Lucido reached the first milestone with an 8-4 decision at first doubles. Partnered with Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School), Lucido defeated Allie Serranko and Caitlin Gordon to clinch the first point of the day.
Although her singles win was not necessary to guarantee that the Bison advance to the semifinals, Lucido defeated Serranko for a second time at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-1. Lucido is now 15-5 this spring and 22-10 for the year in singles.
Gathering the first win of the day and recording their 11th win of the season, Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) teamed up for an 8-0 victory over Lucy Bass and Liza Blank at third doubles. The doubles wins for both Lucido and Iepuras as well as Dwojweski and Vidrascu were their second of the year against their respective opponents.
Vidrascu made equally quick work of her foe in singles. The freshman blanked Bass 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. Vidrascu has not allowed a game to Bass in two matches this year as the rookie helped Bucknell to a 7-0 sweep over the Leopards during the regular season.
Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) were the next to win, clinching the team victory. Both Bison allowed only one game each, topping their opponents by an identical score of 6-1, 6-0. Dwojewski was also a winner at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1 over Blank.
Bucknell hopes for some revenge when it faces Navy tomorrow morning. The Midshipmen defeated Holy Cross 6-0 in the first of Friday's matches, allowing just three games in three doubles matches and one game in six singles matches to the Crusaders. Navy won the regular-season meeting against Bucknell, 6-1, on its home court on March 27. The Bison are undefeated in their last six semifinal appearances.
