LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis improved to 10-7 on the season with a convincing 6-1 win over Lafayette at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. The victory gives the Bison their first season with double-digit wins since 2008 and just their fourth since 2000. With a 3-2 league record, it also gives them the fourth seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
The 2008 Bison, which included this year's senior class playing then as freshmen, finished their season with an 11-10 record. That was the most wins since the 2002 team finished 14-6.
Bucknell never gave Lafayette (6-10, 1-5) an opportunity in the match. After being recognized on Senior Day, veteran Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and sophomore teammate Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) took the first step to giving the Bison the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Sinan Ipeker and Kyle MacLelland. Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) secured the early lead defeating Scott Gelbman and Will Mercorella by an 8-6 decision.
Katten and Morque have now won seven of their last eight doubles matches, improving their spring record to 10-5 together.
From there, the 10th win of the campaign came cleanly. Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) quickly dispatched Mercorella 6-3, 6-0 at fifth singles. Zimmer followed with his own 6-0, 6-2 win over Ipeker, and Katten clinched the team victory by winning 6-4, 6-2 over Gelbman.
Straight sets continued to be the order of the day for Cohenca and Rosen who both were 6-4, 6-4 victors over their opponents. Lafayette's only singles win of the day came at the No. 2 position as Doug Gallagher defeated Kovic 7-5, 5-7, (10-3).
Both Zimmer and Rosen have now posted a team-best 4-1 record against Patriot League opponents this spring. Just behind them are Malloy and Katten at 3-2.
Bucknell has just one more dual before heading to the Patriot League Tournament April 15-17 at Bethlehem, Pa. The Orange and Blue will host Robert Morris at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, marking their final home match of the season.
