BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Fourth-seeded Bucknell men's tennis advanced to the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals with a 4-1 win over Colgate at the Ulrich Varsity Courts in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday morning. The victory gives the Bison their fifth consecutive trip to the semis and a chance to take on No. 1 Army at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Bucknell (11-7) needed just over the minimum number of matches to move on in the tournament. A quick doubles point went in their favor as Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) kicked things off with an 8-1 win over Phil Bernasek and Connor Feuille. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackely School) also defeated Parker Lewis and Alec Goldstein 8-5 at the No. 2 position.
The win for Cohenca and Malloy was a return to the tandem's old form. The last time the team won a doubles match came against Colgate (6-12) during the regular season, 8-7, on April 2.
After not needing to finish his doubles match with Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) kept the success rolling for the Orange and Blue in singles. Katten defeated Bernasek 6-0, 6-4 at the third spot in the lineup. Malloy and Zimmer followed with their own victories, clinching the quarterfinal win.
Malloy's second win of the day came against Feuille at No. 5 singles. Feuille hung around in the first set before Malloy broke it open in the second. The Bison senior ended his day with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the end. Malloy now has a total career record of 116-60, ranking him fourth all-time at Bucknell and just one victory shy of tying Jonathan Brenner for third on the list. He also needs just one more singles win to tie Ryan Sandburg for second in program history.
Zimmer won his fifth consecutive Patriot League match and his second straight over Goldstein with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles.
Bucknell's next test will come against Army tomorrow morning at the Lewis Tennis Center in Bethlehem, Pa. As the top seed, the Black Knights received a first-round bye. When Bucknell and Army squared off in the regular season, the Black Knights came away with a 6-1 win. It was the Bison's second and final loss in their league schedule. Army is 4-0 in the postseason against Bucknell.
