Bucknell Women's Tennis Comes Up Short in 6-1 Loss to North Dakota

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bucknell women's tennis captured just a pair of victories in a 6-1 loss to North Dakota in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday evening. Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) were the first on the board for the Bison, teaming up for a tough 8-6 win in doubles, while Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) added to the list in singles.
No doubles match came easily to the Bison (4-7). Although Dwojewski and Vidrascu were the only ones to take a win for Bucknell, the other two duos came very close. Lucido and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) fell 9-7 at the first position, while Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) took a 9-8 hit at second doubles.
Play remained close into singles play as three of the six matches went to either three sets or a super tiebreak to determine a winner. Lucido was one of those. After taking the first set off the Fighting Sioux's Stephanie Petsis 6-4, Lucido saw her lead disappear in the second as Petsis won 6-2. The match ultimately went in the Bison's favor, 10-5 in the breaker.
Iepuras and Dwojewski also went three sets but were not as lucky as their teammate. Iepuras was unable to maintain the momentum of a 6-2 first-set win and dropped the final two fames, 6-4 and 6-3 to Erin Kappers. Dwojewski fell in a first-set tiebreaker before rebounding for the 7-5 win in the second frame. Stephanie Biehn finally took fifth singles with a 10-6 decision.
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on Drake at 10 a.m. at Liberty High School in Orlando.
