ORLANDO, Fla. – Bucknell men's tennis came from behind in more than one match, and the effort ultimately led to a 5-2 victory over South Dakota State in Orlando, Fla., on Monday. The Bison have won each of their last four matches, brining their spring dual record to 4-4.
Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) got the Orange and Blue off to a good start with an 8-2 win at second doubles. Clinching the doubles point was Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex), who overcame a 3-6 deficit at the first position. After being down, the Bison duo rallied for a 9-8 tiebreaker victory.
The win was the first of the spring for Kovic. The senior took over sole possession of sixth place all-time at Bucknell in doubles victories with a career record of 51-52. Malloy also improved his standing, moving into a tie for eighth (49-31), while Cohenca is tied for 16th (38-33) in doubles.
The trend continued in singles action as Cohenca and Zimmer dominated their foes from the get-go. Both won in straight sets in the first two positions. Malloy then claimed Bucknell's fourth point of the day with his own Houdini act. The senior lost his first three games, then closed out the match by winning 12 of the next 14. The effort gave him a 6-3, 6-2 victory over James Thorp at No. 5.
Malloy has won each of his last four singles matches as has Cohenca. Those are the longest winning streaks of any Bison this spring.
Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) bounced back at No. 4 singles later in the day. The freshman dropped his first four games of the match before winning the first set 6-4. He closed out the contest with a 7-6 decision over the Jackrabbits' Chris Baron in the second set.
Bucknell will continue play tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a match against Liberty. The action will take place at Lake Cane in Orlando.
