Winning Streak Ends for Bison Men's Tennis with 6-1 Decision to Liberty

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bucknell men's tennis ran up against a tough Liberty team on Tuesday morning, falling 6-1 to Flames in Orlando, Fla. Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) claimed the lone point for the Bison (4-5) with a three-set win at fifth singles.
The loss ends a four-match winning streak for the Bison. Bucknell went nearly a month without falling to an opponent with the last loss coming to Georgetown on Feb. 19.
Malloy lost the first set in a hurry, falling 6-1 to Mandeep Yadev. The second set was not an easy task either, but the outcome went in Malloy's favor, 7-6. The match ended with a 10-8 decision to the Bison.
Malloy's win was his fifth in a row at singles. With 105 combined career victories, he is tied with Daniel Bednarek for fifth all-time at Bucknell.
No other Bison was able to gather a win at singles or doubles, although Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) put up a battle. Like Malloy, each player forced three-set matches in singles. Unlike their teammate, however, they were unable to have the final say. Cohenca fell to Siim Tuus, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at first singles. Katten took a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 hit at the No. 3 position.
Liberty opened the day by sweeping doubles action. No Bison duo came closer than 8-5 in any of the three matches.
Bucknell will be back in action on Thursday. The Bison and NJIT will meet at Lake Cane in Orlando for an 8 a.m. match.
