LEWISBURG, Pa. -- National goal-scoring leader Aimee Gennaro added seven more to her total and Jasmine DePompeo tallied another six goals, leading Navy to a 17-7 win over Bucknell in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss overshadowed a very good day for Bison goalie Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East), who finished with a career-high 19 saves.
The Bison dropped their fifth game in a row and fell to 1-6 on the season, while high-powered Navy improved to 7-1, with the only loss coming to No. 2 Northwestern. The Mids have now scored 112 goals in eight games, with 32 coming from the freshman Gennaro.
Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) came off the bench and scored a career-high four goals for Bucknell, which played without two-time All-Patriot League midfielder Julia Braun for the third time this season due to injury.
DeLorenz kept the Bison in the game early with one spectacular save after another. She made 13 in the first half alone, and it was just a 6-2 game until Gennaro tossed in two goals in the final 1:46 of the half.
Gennaro tallied again off a DePompeo feed 2:03 into the second half, but then Bucknell outscored Navy 3-2 over the next four minutes. Just after the Gennaro goal, Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) won the draw control and hit Hurwitz for a breakaway goal. Later, Katelyn Miller (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Hurwitz scored back-to-back to make it an 11-5 game.
Navy put it away with a 4-0 run, however, stretching its lead to 15-5 on Jill Coughlin's second goal of the day. Hurwitz scored her fourth of the day with 14:08 remaining, and then Andrea Feldman (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) finished the scoring with her second goal of the year on a free-position shot in the final minute of the game.
Wendling, a sophomore who moved up from defense to midfield, had two assists in the game for her first two collegiate points. Molly Ford (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's), one of nine freshmen in Bucknell's starting lineup, also produced a goal.
Caitlin Mandrin Hill had five assists and 10 draw controls for Navy, which outshot Bucknell 46-16 and won the draw battle 18-8.
The Bison return to action at home on Wednesday against Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
