PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) picked up a pair of wins, but Bucknell women's tennis fell 6-1 to Pittsburgh at the Oxford Athletic Club North on Friday afternoon. Lucido's success now brings her career wins totals to 72 in both singles and doubles, more than any other current Bison.
Bucknell (0-1) got off to a rough start in its first dual match of the year, dropping the doubles point. Lucido and partner Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) earned the only win, defeating the Panthers' (2-3) Elizabeth Adams and Gabi Catanzariti, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.
Lucido went on to win at first singles with a straight sets decision over Catanzariti, 6-3, 6-4. The Bison senior is now 72-31 in her singles career, just one victory shy of cracking the top five for most wins in program history. With a 72-26 doubles record, she takes over sole possession of the fourth spot on the Orange and Blue's career wins list, surpassing former teammate Paulina Gamboa.
Tuzhikova is looking at moving onto her first record list. With today's win, the sophomore is 25-16 in her doubles career, putting her one victory shy of the top 25 in program history.
Bucknell battled in a pair of close matches against Pittsburgh, but luck did not go in its favor. In doubles, Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) nearly pulled out the decision for the Bison but could not stay in front of Karam Parbhu and Brittney Russell. The Pittsburgh duo won 9-7 at the No. 3 position.
Tuzhikova nearly claimed her second win of the day at No. 6 singles, pushing Minh Evans to a deciding super tiebreak. The Bucknellian dropped the opening set 7-5 before taking the second frame convincingly. A 6-2 win evened the match, but momentum did not carry through to the end of the day for Tuzhikova, however. Evans came away with a 10-8 win in the breaker to close out competition.
Bucknell will play for its first duals win tomorrow. The Bison will stay over in Pittsburgh for a bout with Duquesne at 10 a.m.
