PITTSBURGH, Pa. - For the second consecutive weekend a 23-year-old swimming record of Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey has fallen. This week, the record breaker was junior Matthew Segar, who won the 200-yard freestyle Saturday at Pittsburgh's Trees Pool at the ECAC Championships in a time of 1 minute, 38.13 seconds. It is the 14th all-time individual Eastern title for a Bison.
Segar, who last week recorded the second-best time in the 200 free in program history (1:38.41) en route to a third-place finish at the Patriot League Championships, shaved .22 seconds off Harvey's standard that had stood since the 1988 NCAA Championships.
The ECAC title is the first of Segar's career, while it marks the third Bison crown in the last four years as Luke Trafton won the 1,650 free title in 2008 and Eric Sokolosky claimed the 100 free medal last year. Harvey, who had his long-standing 200 IM record broken last week by Mike Nicholson and Christian Treat, won Eastern titles in the 100 free in 1987 and the 100 fly in 1988.
Segar's win was not the only one for Bucknell on Saturday as he, Trevor Reitz, Treat and Matt Ramey helped the Bison 800 free relay to a victory in the night's closing event. The foursome swam the race in 6:47.12, the fourth-best time in program history.
With the dual titles on Saturday, Bucknell has won multiple Eastern medals in the same year for the first time since another Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer, Jay Gross, swept the 50 free and 100 free 1993.
The Bison men stand ninth in the team standings with 127 points, while the Bucknell women are 10th with 97 points following the second day of the three-day meet.
Thomas Brown posted a third-place showing in the 100 back, while Treat added a fourth-place finish in the 200 free to give the Bison men three individual top-five finishes.
Freshmen Ramey (ninth in the 400 IM), Reitz (10th in the 100 fly) and Daniel Wallace (14th in the 200 free) also advanced to the finals, giving Bucknell six finals participants.
On the women's side, the Bison saw sophomore Morgan Oxley (16th in the 100 breast) and freshman Alex Panzarino (11th in the 100 fly) earn finals berths, while four other swimmers recorded season-best times in various events in the prelims. Panzarino's time of 57.84 in the 100 fly finals placed her eighth on the program's all-time list.
The final day of the ECAC Championships will take place Sunday with the prelims kicking off at 9 a.m. and the finals starting at 4 p.m.
