LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's track and field wrapped up its regular-season schedule with five first-place finishes at the Bucknell Winter Classic held at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Bison now look forward to the Patriot League Championships next weekend.
Among the winners on Saturday was freshman Beth Braunegg (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) in the 1000 meters. Braunegg's winning time of 2 minutes, 54.75 seconds was a career best by almost six seconds and ranks sixth all-time at Bucknell. The race was the fastest by a Bison since Christa Sawko set the program record (2:53.90) in 2006. It is Braunegg's first appearance on a program top-10 list.
Emily Ando (Weston, Conn./Weston) was just edged out of a gold medal in the pole vault by teammate Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), but the freshman moved up the program's record list into fifth place. Ando cleared 11 feet, 5 ¾ inches, bettering her previous career best by almost seven inches. Frey's victory came with a season-best 11-9 ¾.
Two other wins helped Bucknell sweep a couple of events. On the track, Erin Horleman (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) was the victor in the 500 meters in a time of 1:19.42. Valerie Sans (Littleton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) followed in second (1:22.03), and Hannah Jones (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) was third (1:22.30).
Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) won the shot put with a throw of 41-8. Just behind her in second place was Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) with a mark of 41-2 ¼, while Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) was fourth (40-11).
Wrapping up the list of winners was Abby Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata), posting the top mark in the weight throw. The sophomore threw 49-5 ½ for the best mark of her career.
Bucknell will try to run with the momentum when it travels to Navy for the Patriot League Championships Feb. 18-20. The Bison won the title a year ago over the second-place Midshipmen.
