LORETTO, Pa. - Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) recorded her first double-double of the season, but the full effort from the junior was not enough to keep Bucknell women's basketball from falling 70-53 to Saint Francis (Pa.) at DeGol Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Bison trailed by as many as 32 in the second half as the Red Flash's Alli Williams led all players with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
Horbatuck set a career high with 15 points to go along with her 11 boards. The junior was 5-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-8 from the free throw line with much of that production coming in the second half. Eleven of her 15 points all came in the final 20 minutes.
The Bison battled its way through the first half as their offense went into hiding on them. Horbatuck grabbed a rebound and claimed the second-chance points for Bucknell's first bucket of the game at 18:54. Alyssa Dunn (Mason, Ohio/Seven Hills School) eventually added a free throw, but the Bison didn't record another field goal until the 10:28 mark when Dunn went the length of the court on a steal and converted it into a layup.
Bucknell got Saint Francis' lead down to seven points as the Red Flash put the Bison in the bonus with more than eight minutes left in the half. Horbatuck made both free throws in her first trip to the line, and Bucknell was down 16-9.
Two minutes later, at 6:08, Audrey Dotson (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill School) added a bucket, but that was Bucknell's last field goal for the remainder of the first half. The only dent on Bucknell's side of the scoreboard during that stretch was a trio of free throws.
At halftime, the Bison trailed 26-14. While they shot 4-for-21 (19.0%) from the field, the Red Flash were held to 9-for-34 (26.5%). Much of the damage was done by Saint Francis' Williams who finished the half with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Things did not look up much for the Bison in the second half as their shots continued to be off the mark. Katherine Harris (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) hit a couple of jumpers early in the frame, but field goals were still in short supply.
The only thing happening with any frequency was fouls. Saint Francis began shooting in the double bonus with 12:10 left in the game. At the end of the game, the Red Flash were 17-for-25 (68.0%) from the line, including 11-for-16 (68.8%) in the second half.
Bucknell's offensive production only started to pick up as Saint Francis began making late substitutions. Horbatuck took advantage scoring all of her 11 second-half points in the final 10 minutes of play.
The Bison shot 35.4 percent (17-for-48) from the field for the game after going 48.1 percent in the second half. For the fourth game this season, Bucknell failed to make a three-point shot. Behind Horbatuck in the scoring column was Harris and Shelby Trotter (Silverhill, Ala./Robertsdale) with seven points apiece. Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished with a career-high nine rebounds.
Bucknell will be back in action Nov. 30 when it hosts Canisius at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
