Second-Half Goal Lifts Army Past Bucknell Women's Soccer, 1-0

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Trying to make it two straight Patriot League wins over the weekend, the Bucknell women's soccer team came up just short in a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Army on Sunday afternoon at Clinton Field. The Bison generated a number of scoring chances in the second half but could not match Ruthie Rosenberger's 64th-minutue goal for the Black Knights.
The Bison, who blanked Holy Cross 2-0 on Friday night, fell to 3-8-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Patriot League, while Army improved to 9-2-3, 2-0-1.
After a fairly uneventful opening half in which the two teams combined for only five total shots, the game opened up in the second 45 minutes, when the Black Knights launched 12 shots to Bucknell's eight.
Army broke the scoreless deadlock at the 63:16 mark when a cross from Dee Clegg was redirected in off the shoulder of Rosenberger.
Moments later, Chesley Garkowski had a good look from in close for the Bison, but her shot went over the crossbar. Courtney Nelson then made a strong defensive play to deny a shooting opportunity from Army scoring leader Kim An, and in the 71st minute Nelson hit the crossbar with a shot. Cassie Denger's follow-up attempt was stopped by a diving Monica Lee after the ball took a deflection on the way in.
Bucknell had another good look in the 76th minute on a hard shot by Nelson, but Lee went to her left to make the save. Nelson led the Bison with three shots.
Army finished the game with a 16-9 shot advantage and led 8-3 in corner kicks. Sandita McDermott had another strong game for the Bison and was credited with three saves, while Lee made four stops for Army en route to her 10th shutout.
Bucknell's five-game road trip ends next Sunday at American at noon.
