WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nicole Paviglionite headed in a free kick in the 69th minute, lifting American to a 1-0 win over Bucknell in an evenly played Patriot League women's soccer match at Reeves Field. Both teams are now 1-3 in league play after Sunday's result, but the good news is that the Bison now have three straight home games to close out the regular season, and they still have a chance to get to the Patriot League Tournament if they can win them all.
Once again, Bucknell was right in a game but could not quite scratch out a goal. Now 3-9-1 overall, Bucknell suffered its seventh one-goal defeat of the year and fifth by a 1-0 score. The Bison had a handful of good scoring chances against American, including a point-blank shot from Evelyn Nicinski that was saved by Eagles keeper Klare Lazor with 12 minutes remaining.
Lazor and Bucknell's Sandita McDermott both made six saves, while American finished with a 14-10 shot advantage. The Eagles scored on what was their best chance of the day. With 22:32 left in regulation, Michaela Cowgill sent in a free kick from about 35 yards out, and Paviglionite headed it in from close range.
Megan DeGennaro, Taryn Boucher and Tara Cort led the Bison with two shots apiece. Six of Bucknell's 10 attempts were on frame.
Bucknell now goes into must-win mode for its final three regular-season contests. Next weekend the Bison host a Friday-Sunday set against Lehigh and Lafayette. Friday's game against the Mountain Hawks will air live on Bison Vision at 7 p.m.
