WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior midfielder Taryn Boucher (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) scored her first two collegiate goals to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over host Holy Cross on Friday night at Smith Soccer Stadium. Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) made all five of her saves in the second half to preserve her third shutout of the season, and the Bison improved to 1-1 in Patriot League play with another big road test coming on Sunday at Army.
After an opening half that saw each team attempt just three shots, Bucknell struck twice in the second period to beat the Crusaders for the seventh straight time. Boucher was the finisher on both tallies. The first came in the 53rd minute on failed clearance by the Holy Cross goalkeeper. Boucher intercepted the misplay and popped it back into the empty net from just outside the box.
In the 72nd minute, Bucknell took the wind out of the Crusaders' sails with the all-important insurance goal. A ball played into the box squirted all the way through to Boucher, who scored from close range to make it 2-0.
Boucher became the first Bison player to score two goals in a game since Kelliann Doherty in last year's Holy Cross game, a 3-2 Bucknell win at Emmitt Field.
The Bison were solid defensively in pitching their third shutout in their last four road games. Holy Cross placed five of its seven second-half shots on frame, and McDermott stopped them all. Bucknell finished with an 11-10 shot advantage.
Bucknell takes on Army on Sunday at 1 p.m. at West Point's Clinton Field. The Black Knights played 110 minutes on Friday night, tying Colgate 1-1.
