LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Mike Nicholson won three events, while veterans Thomas Brown, Matthew Segar, Eric Sokolosky and Christian Treat captured two events apiece, leading the Bucknell men's swimming team to a 168-89 victory over George Washington Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium in its first scored meet of the 2011-12 campaign. The Bison won the first 12 events before swimming exhibition in the final two races.
Nicholson added his name to a fifth list in the Bucknell record book as he won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 40.35 seconds, good for fifth in program history. He won the race by 11.55 seconds over teammate and second-place finisher Erik Heinemann. Nicholson, who already ranks in the top 10 in school annals in the 200 breast, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM, also captured the 100 fly and 200 fly on Saturday. His three victories came by a combined 14.83 seconds.
Bucknell (1-0) had at least two of the top three finishers in 11 of the first 12 events contested, sweeping the top three spots in the 500 free (Segar, Matt Ramey, Heinemann) and 100 fly (Nicholson, Taylor Harris, Bryce Suchomel).
Segar's two wins came in the 200 free (1:41.37) and the 500 free (4:41.50), while Sokolosky swept the sprint free races, winning gold in the 50 free (20.95) and 100 free (46.23).
Brown won the 100 and 200 back with fellow senior Gonzalo DeLeon coming in second in the 100 and third in the 200.
Treat rounded out the list of double-winners for the Bison by placing first in the 100 and 200 breast. He was one of four Bucknell swimmers in the top five of the 100, while he and Nathaniel Frye took 1-2 in the 200. Freshman Ben Seketa finished second in the 100 breast in a time of 58.19, good for 10th place on the program's all-time list.
Brown, Treat and Sokolosky teamed up with Harris to win the meet-opening 200 medley relay by more than two seconds over the Colonials.
Even though the Bison swimmers swam exhibitions in the final two events (200 IM, 400 free relay), they would have won those events as well. Seketa's 1:54.99 in the 200 IM was the fastest in the field, while Brown, Segar, Ramey and Sokolosky would have been victorious in the 400 free by .73 seconds.
Bucknell is now 2-0 all-time against George Washington. The Bison defeated the Colonials 157-100 last year in Washington, D.C.
Bucknell will next be in action in two weeks when it travels to Annapolis, Md., to face Patriot League rivals American, Lafayette and Navy.
