ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Matthew Segar won the 200 and 400 freestyle races, helping the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team to a pair of Patriot League victories at a quad meet at Navy Saturday afternoon. The Bison defeated American (227-67) and Lafayette (226-72), but lost to the host Mids (152.5-128.5). Segar was also part of the gold-medal winning 400 free relay as Bucknell totaled six first-place showings in the final results.
Bucknell and Navy combined to win all 14 of the swimming events in the meet that was conducted in long course meters. American and Lafayette combined for just four top-five placings in the swimming events, until Navy starting swimming exhibitions over the final three events.
Segar's victories came while the Mids were still swimming a full complement. He won the 200 free by 1.16 seconds, and he claimed the 400 free by just .02 seconds. The veteran was also the runner-up finisher in the 100 free, one spot ahead of classmate Eric Sokolosky.
Segar was not the only Bison to win an event as Sokolosky tied for first place in the 50 free. Both he and Navy's Robbie Parker touched the wall in 24.44 seconds. Sokolosky was also part of the winning 400 free relay with Segar, Thomas Brown and Taylor Harris.
Christian Treat nearly joined Segar and Sokolosky in the win column, but he finished .04 seconds behind 100 breast winner Luke Hoffer.
Mike Nicholson posted two wins late in the meet, claiming the 100 fly and 200 IM.
Nicholson, Treat, Sokolosky and Brown teamed up on the 400 medley relay and earned the silver medal in the first event of the meet. Brown was also Bucknell's top finisher in the 100 back (4th) and 200 back (2nd).
Jon Jones was the only Bison in the diving events and he finished fourth (three-meter) and second (one-meter). His score of 232.65 off the three-meter ranks sixth in program history.
Bucknell will be back in action in two weeks when it hosts the three-day Bison Invitational Nov. 18-20 inside Kinney Natatorium.
