LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team claimed 14 of 22 events in a season-opening non-scored meet against UMBC Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Sophomore Mike Nicholson won three individual medley events for the Bison, while junior Christian Treat claimed three freestyle races.
Nicholson won the 100 IM, 200 IM and 400 IM, two of them by more than four seconds, as he followed an impressive freshman campaign with a strong showing in his first sophomore-year meet. Nicholson's largest victory was in the 400 IM, where he finished 8.90 seconds ahead of runner-up teammate Billy Krause. Nicholson touched the wall in 3 minutes, 58.75 seconds.
Treat matched Nicholson for the team lead in victories as he won the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free. Teammate Bryce Suchomel was the next Bison finisher in the 50 and 100, placing third in both races, while Daniel Wallace took third in the 200.
Freshman Ben Seketa won both the 100 and 200 breast to round out the list of Bison to win multiple events. He also finished second in the 50 breast to classmate Tim Perley. Bucknell was strong in the breaststroke events with four of the top five finishers at all three distances (50, 100, 200).
Other individual winners for Bucknell included freshman Collin Greene in the 500 free, senior Eric Sokolosky in the 50 fly and senior Taylor Harris in the 50 back. The Bison also won the 200 medley relay, claiming three of the top four spots in the race.
Saturday's season-opening meet featured a different lineup of events than a typical dual meet.
Bucknell will be idle until Oct. 22 when it will host George Washington in a scored meet. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. inside Kinney Natatorium.
