Bison Open & Multi Results - Day 2
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sasha Hornock (Dover, Pa./Dover) won the long jump, then capped off her day with a victory in the 60 meters with one of the best times in program history to lead Bucknell women's track and field at the Bison Open & Multi on Saturday. The sophomore was not the only one to put up impressive times, however, as Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and Emily Liggett (Grosse Point, Mich./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) became first-time members of the Bucknell top-10 lists at the Penn State National Invitational.
Hornock ran the two fastest races of her career when she headed down the straightaway in the 60 meters. The sprinter claimed a time of 7.83 seconds in the prelims, which bettered her previous personal best that ranked second all-time at the university, by .01 seconds. Not happy with that, Hornock improved her mark to 7.77 seconds for the win in the final. She still ranks second in program annals but is now just .02 seconds behind the record, set by Tolu Fayanjuola in 2004.
Earlier in the day, Hornock won the long jump with a distance of 18 feet, 0 ¼ inches. The mark fell just shy of her career-best from the Bison Opener last December when she won with a mark of 18-1.
Hornock was not the only Bison to take gold at the Bison Open & Multi. Freshman Erin Horleman (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) won the 500 meters, and her time of 1:18.77 was a full two seconds faster than her previous career best. It was also nearly two seconds faster than her closest competitor on Saturday, as teammate Amanda Steinke (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) was second in 1:20.45.
Casey Krause (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) had a stand-out day in the field, finishing second in the long and triple jump. In the long jump, the senior finished at 17-1 ¼. Her triple jump mark of 36-7 was also her best of the year. Alexandra Romanelli (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) was third in the triple jump (36-6 ¾).
In the throws, Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) placed third in the shot put (40-8 ¼), while Abby Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and Kathryn Wahls (Spencerport, N.Y./Brockport) went 2-3 in the weight throw. Monaghan's best of 49-0 ¼ gave her a second consecutive day at 49-plus feet in the event as she also threw 49-2 ¼ at Penn State yesterday.
Saturday's edition of the Penn State National Invitational proved to be just as successful as yesterday's. Tolli placed third in the 1000 meters. Her time of 2:57.06 ranks ninth all-time at Bucknell and is the first event in which the sophomore has cracked the program top-10 list. Joining her in that distinction was Liggett, whose time of 5:01.14 in the mile ties her for ninth at Bucknell. The performance earned her a seventh-place finish at on Saturday.
Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) is no stranger to the program record lists having broken into the top 10 in various events in each of her last four meets. The freshman improved her career-best 500-meter time this weekend. Finishing seventh in 1:16.20 at Penn State, she is now eighth all-time among Bison.
Zymet, who is the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, also owns some of the program's best marks in the 200 meters (10th, 2.92), 400 meters (t-9th, 25.92) and sprint medley relay (5th, 4:11.91). On day one of the Penn State National Invitational, she added her name as a member of the sixth-fastest distance medley relay placed sixth in 11:56.72.
"Overall, it was an outstanding weekend for both our men's and women's track and field teams. We qualified a lot of people for the IC4A-ECAC Championships, and a lot of athletes hit their season- and personal-best marks. It seem like we are starting to get some of our injured people back as well," said head coach Kevin Donner. "We are starting to gain some confidence as we head into the championship portion of the indoor season."
Bucknell will try to continue to make headway on the road to the championship next weekend when it heads to Yale's Geigengack Invitational in New Haven, Conn., on Feb. 5.
