LEWISBURG, Pa.- US National Champion Evelyn Bliss continued her reign of triumph by winning twin awards in Patriot League Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and Bison of the Week. The javelineer easily won the event at the 60th Colonial Relays, as part of Bucknell's third straight victory at the competition. She shattered the facility and meet record set back in 1992 and her throw moved into first place in the NCAAs. She is the first Bison since high jump record holder Karen Hull on March 26, 2024 to win Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
"Evie had a great meet at William & Mary," said throws coach Ryan Protzman. "She was really dialed in on the runway, and her average is great for this time of the year. Every throw she takes has the energy to go 60 meters and then some. It allows us to work on the little things that are going to show big payoff. I think she can do something special at the Bison Outdoor Classic, and then we'll give her a break before Penn Relays."
Bliss started strong, surpassing 56 meters in her first attempt and hit 50+ in two other marks before fouling in her fifth chance. The Bison junior refocused her energy, observed her sylvan surroundings - the throws area at William & Mary is located in a wooden glen reminiscent of campgrounds - and delivered, despite the gradual uphill curve, a mark of 59.95m (196-8) in her final try.
The throw broke Marilyn Senz's - a participant in the 1991 Pan-Am Games - mark of 56m (183-8.50) - established in 1992. The distance also shot Bliss to the number one spot in the NCAA and practically guaranteed the two-time All-American a third consecutive NCAA qualifying bid.
Bucknell hosts the annual Bison Outdoor Classic - one of the largest events on the East Coast - this weekend. The competition will be streamed on FloTrack.
