LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second week in a row, Bucknell women's basketball's Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was named the Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Romine averaged a team-best 14.0 points and 2.3 steals per game last week. She now has a Patriot League-best four rookie accolades this season.
Romine led Bucknell in scoring at Penn State with 11 points before posting a team-high 22 points at Yale yesterday. The guard now has four games with 20-plus points, which is the most among current Bison and tied for the most among all Patriot League players. Adding to her 22 points against the Bulldogs were three steals, tying a career high, and three assists.
The freshman's three steals at Yale tied her total from a game earlier against Cornell. Romine helped the Bison to their third win of the season with nine points, five assists and a blocked shot against the Big Red.
With the non-conference schedule officially in the books, Romine holds the team's and Patriot League's top mark in scoring with 15.3 points per game. Her 2.8 assists is also first among Bucknellians, while her 1.3 steals per game average also ranks second on the team.
Romine's four Rookie of the Week honors is the most by a Bison since Lindsey Hollobaugh received the award eight times during the 2003-04 season. Romine also earned her first two citations in the opening weeks of the season, becoming the first Bison since Desire Almind in 2000-01 to be named the top rookie in back-to-back voting periods to start the campaign. More recently, she was named the Rookie of the Week on Dec. 27 following a career-best 23-point performance at Wofford.
Bucknell will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 8 when they host Navy in the Patriot League opener. Tip off at Sojka Pavilion is set for 7 p.m. The contest has been designated Coca-Cola Day. The Jr. Bison Club Party and a postgame autograph session are also scheduled.
