LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's track and field closed out day one of the Bison Open & Multi and Penn State National Invitational with three wins and a pair of program top-10 marks on Friday. Bucknell was led by Taylor Funk (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant Area) who claimed gold with the program's third-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles. The Orange and Blue will have plenty of time to add to that resume as both meets continue tomorrow.
For the third consecutive meet, Funk recorded a personal-best mark in the hurdles. This time around it earned her first place at the Bison Open & Multi and shot her up the record list. With a time of 9.08 seconds, the junior jumped from sixth in history to third.
Joining Funk with a top-three finish in the meet was Jamie Leacock (Howell, N.J./Howell). Leacock was third with a season-best time of 9.16.
Although few in numbers, the Bison put up some of their best results of the season at Penn State. The women's distance medley relay of Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X), Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) finished sixth overall. Their time of 11:56.72 also ranks sixth in program history and is the fastest by a Bucknell relay since 2006 when Lauren Bricker, Catherine Trentacoste, Christa Sawko and Erin Cranmer-Hart ran 11:56.00. The performance earns the current Bison a trip to the ECAC Championships in March.
The only individual and field athlete in action at Penn State's Ashenfelter Track on Friday, Abby Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata) was 18th in the weight throw. The sophomore recorded a distance of 49-2 ¼, setting a career best.
Among the other wins at Gerhard Fieldhouse was Eileen Foley (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) in the 5000 meters (18:02.43) and the distance medley relay (12:34.62). Emily Ando (Weston, Conn./Weston) tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 9 ¾ inches.
Victoria Schmidt (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) placed fifth in the pentathlon. The freshman totaled 2,926 points in her first career multi-event. Along the way, she was the first finisher in the 60 meters and earned third-place showings in the high jump and long jump.
Bucknell will continue at both meets tomorrow. The Bison Open & Multi resumes at Gerhard Fieldhouse at 9:30 a.m. with the long jump. The Orange and Blue's first event at Penn State is set for a 10:40 a.m. start with the 500 meters.
