LEWISBURG, Pa. - Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) won two events and finished second in another and Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) recorded the third-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle in school history, but the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team lost its final dual meet of the year to Connecticut, 191-109, Friday evening at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison completed the dual portion of their schedule with a 7-4 mark, while the Huskies improved to 5-2 on the season.
Prior to the meet, Bucknell's six seniors (four women, two men) were honored during Senior Night ceremonies. The four Bison women seniors recognized were Molly Goebel (New Canaa, Conn./New Canaan), Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), Sinead O'Dwyer (Green River, Wyo./The Peddie School (N.J.)) and Laura Twichell (Fayetteville, NY./Fayetteville-Manlius). Goebel ended the night with a win and a second-place showing, while O'Dwyer posted a top-four finish in the 200 IM. Keath registered a runner-up finish in the 100 breast and a top-five placing in the 200 breast.
Porcellio was the lone double-winner for the Bison as she claimed the 200 free and the 200 IM. She also finished second, but was Bucknell's top finisher, in the 200 breast. The sophomore also teamed up with Goebel, Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Kaitlyn Utkewicz (Montville, N.J./Montville) to win the meet-ending 200 free relay.
Pontecorvo was unable to match Porcellio in terms of victories, but she did move up to third on Bucknell's all-time list with her second-place showing in the 1,000 free. Her time of 10 minutes, 21.97 seconds shaved nearly 3.5 seconds off her previous best and moved her from fourth to second on that list that is topped by teammate Jamie Chakany (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Pontecorvo also earned a silver medal in the 500 free.
Goebel and Wright teamed up to take the top two spots in both the 50 free and 100 free. Goebel won the 50 free with Wright just .14 seconds back. The two flip-flopped in the longer of the two races with Wright winning and Goebel touching the wall second.
Overall, Bucknell posted five wins on Friday and all five were in freestyle events.
The Bison will wrap up their regular season on Saturday when they host American and Connecticut for the Bison Invitational. The three-team meet will begin at noon at Kinney Natatorium.
