LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's track and field won its second consecutive meet and the women's squad took second at the Bucknell Heptagonal on Saturday. The teams combined for 10 individual victories and five more program top-10 marks at Gerhard Fieldhouse in their final scored meet of the regular season.
The Bison men earned a convincing victory with 175.3 points, while Duquesne was a distant second. The Dukes closed out the meet with 108 points, followed by Shippensburg's 91.3 points to round out the top three.
Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) continued his assault on Bucknell's record lists. The junior won both the 60-meter hurdles in time of 8.61 seconds, which ranked second all-time among Bison. The hurdles was not the only event in which Arent claimed gold. Later in the day, he also won the 500 meters (1:06.11).
Arent was the only dual winner, but he was joined by Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) and D.J. Krystek (Pitcairn, Pa./Gateway Senior) at the top of the podium in the running events. Bell won the 60-meter dash (6.90), and Krystek was the victor in the 5000 meters (15:20.90)
Bucknell was equally dominant in the field events as Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton), Daniel Markwalter (Viena, Va./Thomas Jefferson S&T), Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) and Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) won their respective events. Joseph earned the top spot in the weight throw for the second time this season. This time it was with a mark of 55 feet, 2 ¼ inches.
The Bison continued to clean up in the throws with four scorers in the shot put, led by Shapiro. The senior recorded a mark of 50-7 ¼ for the win, but he was followed closely by Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS) in second (50-5 ¼). Quinten Marcott (Wayland, Mich./Wayland) and Stephen Koullias (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the event as well.
Markwalter took the title in the pole vault, clearing 14-9. He just edged out teammate Scott Weismiller (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and Duquesne's Jonathan Dorp. The trio all cleared the same height, but it was Markwalter who came away with the win on misses. Powell's victory in the high jump also came with the help of misses. The junior cleared 6-6 ¾ along with Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and Dan Johnson of East Stroudsburg.
The Bucknell women saw their share of success in the pole vault as well. Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was second in the event with a height of 11-3 ¾. Freshmen Emily Ando (Weston, Conn./Weston) and Autumn Schellenberger (Bethel, Ohio/Bethel Tate) tied for third (10-9 ¾). Ando already ranks seventh all-time at Bucknell, but Schellenberger's performance moved her into 10th all-time in program history.
Not to be outdone by the field events, both of the Bison's wins came on the track. Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) earned the gold in the 5000 meters, crossing the line in 17:55.57. Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) later won the 800 meters in 2:18.00.
The sprints were kind to Bucknell as well. Taylor Funk (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area), Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each recorded program top-10 times for at least the second consecutive meet. Funk's career-best mark of 9.16 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles earned her fifth in the event and moved into her into a tie for sixth on the record list.
Casalnova and Zymet each set program marks for the third straight meet. Both helped the sprint medley relay to the fifth-fastest time in Bucknell history two weeks ago at the Gulden Relays. After taking over ninth in the 800 last weekend, Casalnova moved into 10th in the 500 today. Her time of 1:16.81 earned her third at the meet. Zymet ran the ninth-fastest times in both the 200 and 500 at The Armory last Saturday. She is now 10th in the 400 with a time of 58.28 at the Bucknell Heptagonal.
Despite the strong performances, Bucknell's women's squad finished second to Duquesne in the team standings. The Dukes had 113 points at meet's end, with the Bison just behind with 108 points. Just as in the men's standings, Shippensburg was third with 73.5 points.
Bucknell will be involved in all kinds of action next weekend. The Orange and Blue will host the Bison Open and Multi Jan. 28-29. Select members of the squad will also travel to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State National Invitational on the same days, and the men's 4x400 relay will head to the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 28.
