LEWISBURG, Pa. - Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) and Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) each won two events and the Bison swept the top three spots off both diving boards as the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team defeated Lehigh, 189-106, Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The win helped the Bison improve to 7-3 this year, including 4-2 against Patriot League foes.
Porcellio won the 200-yard freestyle and 200 breaststroke for her two victories. She also swam fast enough (2:10.46) to win the 200 individual medley, but the Bison had already secured the meet by that point and she swam it as an exhibition.
Goebel led 1-2-3 Bucknell sweeps in both the 50 and 100 free events as Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Kaitlyn Utkewicz (Montville, N.J./Montville) followed her in both. Goebel has now swept the 50 and 100 free in three of the Bison's last four dual meets, and she has not finished lower than third in either event all season. She has a total of 13 first-place showings in those two events.
Bucknell's divers outscored Lehigh 32-6 as Lisa Bolle (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Morgan Popple (Bear Creek, Pa./James M. Coughlin) and Jennifer Kokoska (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) were 1-2-3 off the one-meter board. Popple jumped over Bolle to win the three-meter competition. Third-place Kokoska posted a career-best score of 198.08 off the three-meter, improving upon her previous mark that had ranked ninth in program history. Popple and Bolle already appeared higher on that same list.
Kelly Purcell (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) also led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 free, giving the Bison five 1-2-3 sweeps in the meet. Kaitlyn Sweeney (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Anna Griest (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster School) were second and third behind Purcell.
The Bison posted 11 first-place showings in the first 14 events before exhibitioning the final two, the 200 IM and the 400 free relay. Bucknell's times in those two events were fast enough to win.
Freshmen Melissa Besman (Solon, Ohiio/Solon) and Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) had quite the battle in the 1,650 free. Besman won the race by just .19 seconds over Pontecorvo, 17:36.53-17:36.72.
Other winners for Bucknell included Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) in the 100 breast, Alexandra Psaris (Waterford, Va./The Madeira School) in the 200 fly and the 200 medley relay of Jennifer Brennan (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy), Oxley, Goebel and Wright.
The Bison have now won 11 straight meets against the Mountain Hawks, who fell to 4-4, 3-1 PL on the year.
Bucknell will continue its end-of-the-year homestand when it hosts Connecticut Friday evening at 6 p.m.
