NEW YORK, N.Y. - Freshman Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) won three events for the second consecutive day and Bucknell won six of 16 events overall, but the Bison men's swimming and diving team lost at Columbia, 137-104, Sunday afternoon. It was the second straight day Bucknell competed, following a hard-fought 14-point loss to Patriot League foe Army Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
Against the Black Knights on Saturday Nicholson won the 200 fly, 200 breast and 200 IM. He followed that performance Sunday with wins in the 200 fly, 200 breast and 400 IM.
Bucknell (5-4) was particularly strong in the 200 breast as Nicholson led a 1-2-3 sweep of the event. He took first, followed by Nathaniel Frye (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area), who clocked a season-best 2 minutes, 10.98 seconds, and Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek), who also recorded a season-best time.
Other winners for the Bison included Treat in the 200 free, Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) in the 100 free and Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) in the 200 back. Treat posted another season-best time (1:42.53) in the 200 free, making him the lone Bison with a pair of season-best showings on Sunday.
Even though he did not win a race, Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) had a solid day with a second-place finish to Treat in the 200 free and a third-place showing in the 200 fly, two spots behind Nicholson.
Bucknell recorded second-place finishes in both relays contested Sunday. The 400 medley relay (Brown, Frye, Volpe, Segar) posted its third-best time (3:30.19) of the year, while the 200 free relay (Reitz, Treat, Suchomel, Sokolosky) recorded its second-best time (1:25.29) this season.
Columbia improved to 4-1 this season with the win.
Bucknell will be back in action at Kinney Natatorium this Saturday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Patriot League foe Lehigh at 1 p.m.
