NEW YORK, N.Y. - Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) finished 1-2 in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, but the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team managed just one other victory before Columbia started exhibitioning swimmers and the Bison lost to the Lions, 141.5-96.5, Sunday afternoon. It was the second meet in as many days for Bucknell, which beat Patriot League foe Army on Saturday.
Bucknell fell to 6-3 this year and to 0-6 all-time against Columbia (2-3).
Goebel, who won the 100 free Saturday against Army at Kinney Natatorium, has now swept the 50 and 100 free in three meets this season. She now has a total of 10 first-place finishes in those events. Wright has finished in the top two in the 50 free six times and in the 100 free four times.
The Bison did win five of the 13 events Sunday, but Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) was the only other Bucknell swimmer to post the fastest time in a race as Columbia had a number of swimmers exhibition the final two events. Pontecorvo won the 500 free in 5 minutes, 5.82 seconds, crossing the line nearly 2.5 seconds ahead of the runner-up from Columbia.
Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) won the 200 breaststroke and the 400 free relay team claimed first, rounding out the list of Bison gold medals.
Pontecorvo also earned a second-place showing in the 1,000 free as her time of 10:27.12 was nearly nine seconds faster than the best Bucknell swimmer 24 hours earlier vs. Army.
Morgan Popple (Bear Creek, Pa./James M. Coughlin) was the top Bison diver off both boards, taking fifth off the three-meter and fourth off the one-meter. However, Lisa Bolle (Glenview, Ill./Glenview South) scored a personal-best mark off the one-meter when she tallied a 220.65. She remains in 10th place on the program's all-time list. Her previous best score was a 218.78.
Bucknell will be back in action this Saturday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Lehigh at 1 p.m. at Kinney Natatorium.
