LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) won three events and Bucknell outscored Army 25-11 over the final two events, but the Bison men's swimming and diving team lost to the Black Knights, 156-142, Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell fell to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 against Patriot League opponents, while Army improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in Patriot League action.
Bucknell won nine of 16 events with Nicholson and Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) combining for five gold medals. Nicholson won the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.36), the 200 breaststroke (2:06.39) and the 200 individual medley (1:53.92). He has now won 15 individual events this season.
Sokolosky claimed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, marking the third time this year he has swept those two sprints in a dual.
Other Bison individual winners were Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) in the 200 backstroke, Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) in the 100 breast and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) in the 200 free. Segar's time of 1:40.63 was a new season best by .01 seconds. He also finished second in the 500 free.
The final victory for Bucknell came in the meet's final event, the 400 free relay. The quartet of Segar, Treat, Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Sokolosky timed in at 3:05.13, more than three seconds ahead of the second-place Black Knights.
Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) also had a strong showing on Saturday, finishing third in the 200 fly, 200 back and 200 IM.
The Bison will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they compete at Columbia. They will be looking for their first-ever victory over the Lions. Start time for the meet is 1 p.m.
