LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sarah Furminger scored a pair of goals to lead a precise-shooting Binghamton side to a 3-0 victory over Bucknell Wednesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) had a strong night in goal with 12 saves, but the Bison could not muster much offensively against a stout Bearcats defense.
Binghamton (2-3) scored twice in the first half, both times tucking shots just inside the framework. In the 21st minute Furminger opened the scoring when her seemingly harmless 35-yard shot got a boost from the stiff breeze and sailed over McDermott's reach and just inside the upper left corner of the goal.
With an even eight minutes left in the first half, the Bearcats made it 2-0 when Mary DeWitte played a ball from the middle of the field out wide to her left. Jamie Holliday took a couple of touches and fired a shot off the far post and in for her first goal of the season.
Binghamton added another insurance tally in the 52nd minute when AnnMarie Rizzi found herself in wide open space down the middle of the field. She laid the ball off to her right to a streaking Furminger, who only had the keeper to beat from about 12 yards out.
The Bison (1-5) had few good scoring chances in the game. They put one of their four first-half shots on target, a Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union Endicott) attempt from just inside the 18 that was stopped by Carrie Martin at the right post. Bucknell's best scoring chance came with about five minutes remaining, when Taryn Boucher (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) saw her header tipped over the bar by Binghamton backup keeper Stephanie Speirs.
The Bearcats placed 15 of their 25 shots on goal and outshot the Bison 25-11 overall.
Bucknell returns to action on Friday at Saint Francis (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
