LEWISBURG, Pa. - Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) staked the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the contest, but Saint Francis (Pa.) equalized just 10 minutes later and then won it on a Tesa McKibben score in the fourth minute of overtime. The 2-1 setback dropped the Bison to 1-6 on the season, while the Red Flash improved to 4-2-1.
Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) finished with seven saves for the Bison, who were outshot 19-11 in the contest. After a couple of frustrating offensive showings at home last week, Bucknell started quickly in this one, as Matlack got in behind the defense and beat Red Flash keeper Lauren Fearer from eight yards out just 5:05 into the match.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Barbara Maros de Carvalho scored from 10 yards out off an assist from Haleigh Dunyon in the 16th minute.
Saint Francis outshot the Bison 11-5 in the second half, but McDermott came up with six saves and Casey Crowley (Hamilton Square, N.J./Peddie School) cleared a ball off the line to preserve the 1-1 tie.
The Bison fired the first shot of overtime, but Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) sent her attempt wide of the goal. Then at 3:08 of sudden-death, McKibben scored her fourth of the season with a shot from the top of the 18 into the upper right side.
Caitlin Holtz (Freehold, N.J./Peddie School) led the Bison with three shots, while McKibben had nine for Saint Francis.
The Bison return to action next Wednesday with another road test at Penn State.
