PRINCETON, N.J. - Bucknell field hockey ran up against one of the toughest teams in the country in No. 4 Princeton Sunday afternoon, falling 7-0 at the Class of '52 Stadium. The Tigers' Kathleen Sharkey posted a hat trick to lead Princeton to a victory in its home opener.
After dominating opponents in penalty corners for the past two years, Bucknell (0-4) was unable to make inroads in that area against Princeton (1-0). The Bison drew just two corners, while the Tigers earned 11 in the contest. The shots were equally lopsided as Princeton fired 26 to Bucknell's three.
Of Princeton's 26 shots, 16 made it on goal. Bison goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Academy) made nine saves on the day, but allowed seven goals. Sharkey nabbed three of those scores, with two of them coming in the first half. Molly Goodman also scored multiple times, netting the day's first and final goals.
Princeton's Christina Maida needed to make just one save to earn the win in goal. That stop came off a shot by Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) early in the second half. Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) also recorded two shots for the Bison.
Bucknell will return to Graham Field at Holmes Stadium for its next five games. The homestand starts with Cornell at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 and Towson at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. A rare mid-week game against Lock Haven is slated for Thursday, Sept. 16. The 7 p.m. contest will be available live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com.
