LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey claimed its first win of the season, shutting out Cornell 3-0 at Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory brings the Bison's (1-4) winning streak over the Big Red to five games, while the shutout is their first of 2010.
Much like in past games, Bucknell wasted little time before putting a dent in the score. Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) netted her first career goal just 2:27 into play. The goal came on a redirect from former high school teammate Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) following a penalty corner.
Just over 10 minutes later, Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) made the score 2-0 with her second goal of the season. The senior co-captain displayed some impressive footwork to elude the Cornell (2-1) defense inside the circle and was rewarded with an empty net. Bruvik took advantage with a wide-open goal from the right side.
With the score, Bruvik moved into a tie for 13th all-time at Bucknell in career goals. In just over three years in the Orange and Blue, Bruvik has 18 goals to her name.
The Bison ended the half just as strong as they started, nabbing their final goal with a mere :05 remaining. Bucknell drew its third penalty corner of the frame with time winding down. Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) put her team-best third goal in the back of the net to give Bucknell its 3-0 lead with 35 minutes remaining.
Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) earned the assists on Weiss' goal. While that gave Smith her first point of 2010, it was Raczek's fourth. Raczek also has 31 helpers in her career, putting her three shy of tying the Bucknell program record.
Cornell tried to mount a comeback in the second half but was unable to cash in on its opportunities. The Big Red's best two looks at a goal came minutes apart after play re-opened. Five minutes into the second frame, Cornell got two players past the defense with only Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Academy) standing in the way. Catie De Stio appeared to have a goal in hand, but the forward fired it into the post.
Zargarpour then made a strong save, just getting her pads in the way as Brittany Thompson tried to sneak another shot past the post. Zargarpour (1-4) finished the game with six saves and her first win since helping Bucknell to an overtime victory against Cornell last season.
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow to take on Towson at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. Live stats on GameTracker will be available at BucknellBison.com.
