LEWISBURG, Pa. - Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) scored twice and Bucknell field hockey recorded it second consecutive shutout, beating Towson 4-0 at Graham Field on Sunday afternoon. After a slow start to their season, the Bison (2-4) have won each of their last two games and improved their home record to 2-1.
Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Academy) claimed both wins and shutouts in goal for the Bison. The junior now has three career shutouts, with her first coming against Saint Francis (Pa.) during her freshman campaign. Against Towson (3-3) on Sunday, Zargarpour finished with four saves and improved her season record to 2-4.
Bucknell did not allow a goal in either of its last two contests having also defeated Cornell 3-0 yesterday at Graham Field. Cornell was at the front end of the last set of back-to-back shutouts for the Bison as well. Bucknell claimed a 1-0 overtime victory over the Big Red and a 3-0 win against Holy Cross to finish the 2009 regular season.
Kauffman put together her best offensive performance of the season, tallying the first two goals of the game. The first came on an assist from classmate Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) as the Bison took advantage of a 3-on-2 opportunity. Bruvik found Kauffman by the left net post, and Kauffman was able to flick the ball past the Tigers' goalkeeper Whitney Clugston for a 1-0 lead.
Kauffman scored from nearly the same spot later in the first half. The Bison were unable to score directly off one of their 10 penalty corners, but Kauffman received a pass from Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) that put Bucknell up by two. Kauffman's second score was the third of the season and moved her into eighth place on Bucknell's all-time points list with 62.
Bucknell kept the ball out of its own end through a majority of the first half, and that trend continued into the second. Bruvik took advantage of the time in front of Towson's net and scored her second goal in as many games less than two minutes into the start of the second frame.
With the clock winding down and another win over Towson in sight, Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) gave Bucknell some extra insurance by scoring on a penalty stroke. Siegrist's second goal of the season with 6:13 remaining forced a goalie change for the Tigers with Jamie Dowling replacing Clugston (3-3). Clugston's day ended with four goals allowed and five saves.
Bucknell has now won each of its last two meetings with Towson after beating the Tigers 2-1 last season. That marks the first time the Bison have taken two straight off the Tigers since the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
Helping Bucknell to its new winning streak was a 21-8 shots advantage. The Bison also led in penalty corners, 10-5.
Bucknell will continue its homestand, hosting Lock Haven at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16 at Graham Field. That game will be the first of two Bison field hockey contests broadcast live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com.
