LEWISBURG, Pa. - Daphne Voormolen's hat trick helped Albany remain unbeaten with a 3-2 victory over Bucknell in an evenly played match Saturday at windy Graham Field. Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) scored goals for the Bison who played well after conceding two early goals.
Albany, the defending America East regular-season champions, improved to 3-0 behind Voormolen, a freshman from The Netherlands. She scored her first three career goals, all coming from within a few feet of the goal line. Just 4:20 into the game Christina Patrick slipped a pass around Bison goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, B.C./Handsworth Secondary) to a waiting Voormolen on the doorstep for a 1-0 Albany lead.
About nine minutes later the Great Danes scored off a penalty corner. Zargarpour deflected Corrine McConville's drive into the air, but the Voormolen batted it in right at the goal line to make it 2-0.
Bucknell fought back, however, and did not sulk after having an apparent goal waved off with 11:20 left in the first half. With just 2:20 left on the clock the Bison did pull within one when Lewisburg native Hannah Jones made a nice move to get the end line to the right of the goal, then slid the ball over to Kauffman for the goal. It was Kauffman's first goal of the season, and the assist was the first career point for Jones.
Albany restored its two-goal cushion just after the half. Voormolen scored the goal, but it was Alysia Hough who handled most of the work load on the play. She dribbled from just inside midfield all the way to the end line, and her shot attempt squirted out to Voormolen who tapped it in.
The Bison made it 3-2 on a nice set play off a penalty corner. Stopper Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) laid the ball off to Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison), whose diagonal feed was then tipped in by Richard. It was Richard's first goal of the year.
Just before the goal the Bison almost scored on another penalty corner, but goalie Kristi Troch made one save and then defender Taylor Luke saved one off the goal line.
The Bison kept up good pressure throughout the remainder of the half and had the ball in the circle twice in the final minute of the game but could not come up with the equalizer.
Both teams finished with 13 total shots and Albany led 6-3 in penalty corners (5-0 in the first half). Zargarpour tallied five saves for Bucknell, while Troch and Christine Hoffman split time in the goal for Albany and made three saves apiece.
The Bison will face another major challenge on Sunday, when they travel to fourth-ranked Princeton, a Final Four participant a year ago.
