LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team is quickly getting used to strokes. One day after defeating Sacred Heart on strokes, the Bison dropped a 2-1 decision to Indiana on Sunday at Graham Field after the Hoosiers won the strokes battle. Indiana converted 7 of 9 strokes, while Bucknell connected on 6 of 9.
Bucknell (3-6), lost for just the second time during its five-game homestand, despite playing a solid game against a tough Big Ten squad. The Bison held a 1-0 lead for nearly 20 minutes in the second half after playing the Hoosiers to a 0-0 halftime deadlock.
Neither team scored during the two 15-minute overtime periods, setting up the second consecutive day of strokes for Bucknell. The Bison trailed 2-1 after three rounds, but Rachel Misko (Morristown, Pa./Madison) and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) converted their attempts, and Indiana's Danielle McNally had her shot turned away, giving each team three successful strokes among their first five attempts.
Following the initial five-person lineup, Bucknell matched Indiana (5-3) goal-for-goal. The Hoosiers tallied three straight goals and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Misko and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) matched each one. Finally, Kauffman stepped up knowing she had to convert since the Hoosiers' Emily Bowker had already tallied a goal. Kauffman's shot went wide left of the goal, giving Indiana the victory.
Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary), who faced the strokes for the Bison, made 10 saves during the 100 minutes of regulation and overtime. Half of the stops came during the overtime periods, including four in the first 15-minute segment. Her counterpart, Becky Pany, recorded eight saves, including three in the overtimes.
Bucknell took the lead thanks to a goal from Misko just over three minutes into the second half. Following a penalty corner attempt, Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) corralled a loose ball and sent it across the field to Misko, who was stationed just to the right of the goal. The freshman found the back of the net for the fourth time this season.
The score remained 1-0 for nearly 20 minutes until Lena Grote netted her second goal of the year on an assist from Morgan Fleetwood.
In overtime, Indiana was the aggressor, but Zargarpour was able to turn away five of the Hoosiers seven shots.
It appeared as though Indiana won the game with just over six minutes left in the second overtime period when Brenna Moeljadi fired a shot from straight on past Zargarpour. The Hoosiers started celebrating, but the referees signaled no goal and play continued.
The Bison played the final five minutes of the second overtime period with a six-on-five man advantage as Brooke Borneman was given a yellow card. However, Bucknell was unable to convert during that time frame.
The Bison attempted a total of 17 penalty corners in the contest, including 10 in the second half and five in overtime. Indiana had just nine penalty corners, including four after halftime. The Hoosiers outshot the Bison 20-17, including 7-6 in overtime.
After playing five consecutive home contests, Bucknell will embark on a three-game road trip starting Saturday, Oct. 2, at Holy Cross. The Bison will also play at Harvard and Lafayette before returning home Oct. 10 for a game against Columbia that will have a live video broadcast on Bison Vision.
