WORCESTER, Mass. - Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) recorded her third shutout of the season and Bucknell field hockey earned its first Patriot League win of the season, defeating Holy Cross 2-0 at Hart Field Turf on Saturday afternoon. After being held scoreless in the first half, the Bison broke out for two goals late in the game to improve their record to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League.
Neither team managed much offense through the first half. Bucknell totaled just three shots, while Holy Cross (0-9, 0-1) got off just two in the opening 35 minutes. That changed in the second half. The Bison earned five shots in the final stanza, putting all but one on goal.
The Bison's first successful attempt came off the stick of Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh), who capitalized on a corner penalty with 12:33 remaining. The senior claimed her fourth goal of the season, and Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Katie Durkin (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) earned the assists.
Raczek's helper was the 32nd of her career. That puts her within two of tying the program career record, set by her former teammate Amanda Faust. Durkin's assist was the first of the season for the sophomore.
Just five minutes after Weiss' score, Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) put another ball in the back of the net to give the Bison the 2-0 advantage. Bruvik's goal was also her fourth of the season and gave her a team-best 12 points on the year.
Freshman Hannah Jones (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) drew the assist, passing the ball into Bruvik just inside the circle.
Zargarpour's shutout came easily. Holy Cross managed just three total shots on the day, none on them on goal. The junior keeper is now 4-5 on the season. The Crusaders' Kelly Slotsky took the loss, bringing her record to 0-9 after allowing two goals and making three saves.
With the win, Bucknell has now won two consecutive contests against Holy Cross for the first time in program history. The Bison also claimed a 3-0 shutout at Graham Field last year.
Bucknell will look to win its third game in four tries when it travels to Harvard tomorrow afternoon. The contest in Cambridge, Mass., is set for a 2 p.m. start.
