Bucknell Men's Tennis Dominates at UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - Bucknell men's tennis closed out a successful run at the UConn Invitational on Saturday, claiming a doubles title and advancing five singles players to the semifinals or better in Storrs, Conn. Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) won the Flight B Doubles but at the expense of their own teammates, Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School).
In Bucknell's lone doubles contest of the day, Rosen and Bernstein took an 8-5 decision over Cohenca and Malloy. The freshmen duo is now 6-1 this fall as a doubles team after Bernstein and Rosen also made their final at the Northeast Intercollegiate last weekend.
Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Bernstein will play for the Flight C Single Championship later this week after play was called due to darkness. The teammates joined Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) as finalists after Zimmer qualified in Flight B.
Morque has not dropped a set through his first three singles matches having claimed wins over Connor Crowley of Bryant (6-2, 6-3), Ferdinand Brunet of Boston (6-1, 6-2) and Ryan Carr of Connecticut (6-4, 6-2). His teammate and finals opponent in Bernstein also started strong, but faced a challenge in the semis needing extra chances before sealing the deal against Bryant's Nicolai Hill, 5-7, 6-0, (10-6).
Zimmer's road to the final began with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Sacred Heart's Jinal Shah in the first round. The sophomore continued with his straight sets victories, winning over Quinnipiac's Andrew Weeden (6-4, 6-1) and Bryant's Dana Parziale (6-2, 7-5). Zimmer finally ran into some trouble in the last round, falling 7-5, 2-6, (10-7) to Dave Adams of Connecticut.
Also claiming victories in singles were Cohenca in the first round, while Katten and Rosen advanced to the semifinals in their respective draws.
The Bison's next tournament on the docket is their own as they host the Bucknell Invitational Oct. 1-3 at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
