Men's Tennis Sets Up Bison vs. Bison Doubles Final at UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. – Bucknell men's tennis claimed 10 wins on the first day of the UConn Invitational in Storrs, Conn., on Friday. Among the winners were doubles teams Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) as well as Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) who will meet in tomorrow's Flight B finals.
The freshman duo of Bernstein and Rosen opened play with a quick 8-1 win over Chris Das and Ajeya Shekar from Holy Cross. They followed that with a second-round victory over teammates Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) and Chris Tortora (West Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), 8-4.
Maxson and Tortora had won 8-6 over Boston's Regis Chang and Alex Green in the first round.
Bernstein and Rosen will try to knock off their second consecutive set of Bison teammates in the finals after Cohenca and Malloy won 8-4 over their opponents from Sacred Heart in the second round.
In other doubles action, Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) defeated Cristian Balestrieri and Juan Martin Paredes of Bryant, 8-2 in Flight A. Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) also took an 8-4 victory over Alex Lazerowich and Ben Shapiro of Quinnipiac in Flight A.
Bucknell completed just two singles matches before play was called for the day. Katten defeated Quinnipiac's Brett Francis 6-0, 6-3 in Flight B. Tortora was also a winner, 6-0, 6-0 over Michael Shakro of Sacred Heart in Flight D.
The tournament was originally scheduled to run through Sunday. Connecticut will try to wrap up its event tomorrow due to inclement weather predicted in the area later in the weekend, however.
